Illuminating Bradford’s Textile Heritage Through Large-Scale Projection
When Bradford’s city centre was reimagined in an explosion of light and sound for the BD: is LIT festival, EMF Technology was proud to provide the core technical infrastructure behind one of the event’s most prominent centerpiece displays: Worstedopolis (Warp + Weft).
cccccccccccccc
The content was created by acclaimed artist and digital designer Ronan Devlin, Worstedopolis paid homage to Bradford’s global legacy as the world capital of worsted wool production. Projected directly onto the historic façade of Bradford City Hall, the installation transformed traditional weaving structures—plain, twill, and jacquard—into dynamic, shifting ribbons of light and digital fabric.
To bring Devlin’s intricate, generative textile patterns to life at such an immense scale, the festival required uncompromised visual clarity, rock-solid server performance, and robust electrical distribution.
Technical Delivery: Behind the Pixels
Outdoor architectural projections on historic civic buildings present unique challenges, from complex stone geometry and ambient street lighting to variable autumn weather. EMF Technology delivered an integrated, turn-key technical package to ensure a seamless showcase:
1. High-Output Architectural Projection
-
Supplied and deployed high-lumen, laser-phosphor projectors calibrated specifically for the surface textures and deep architectural recesses of Bradford City Hall.
-
Performed precise optical alignment and edge blending to produce a sharp, high-contrast digital canvas across the building’s expansive façade.
2. Media Servers & Uncompressed Playback
-
Configured dedicated, redundant media server infrastructure to deliver smooth, synchronized video playback.
-
Handled high-resolution content to faithfully reproduce the micro-textures of Ronan Devlin’s Warp + Weft digital weaves without compression artifacts or latency.
3. Temporary Power Distribution & Site Safety
-
Designed and executed full electrical distribution, supplying clean, stable power to all front-of-house (FOH) projection towers and media hardware.
-
Maintained complete outdoor-rated weatherproofing (IP-rated distros and cabling runs) with zero disruption to public footpaths and event access routes.
